Project Overview
Creating an gig economy platform for ex-convicts to reduce recidivism
Affected further by the pandemic, ex-convicts, now have even more difficulty in finding work due to their felony records. Creating a platform exclusively for individuals with felonies, ChanceRabbit, will tap into the often overlooked talent pool of ex-felons.
Millions suffer from unemployment due to the stigma associated with a felony, and often return to crime, because of their limited option.
With the goal of breaking the cycle of recidivism, ChanceRabbit will connects users with skilled individuals who can assist with a diverse range of tasks and services.By providing flexible job opportunities, ChanceRabbit will enable ex-convicts to rebuild their lives, regain financial stability, and successfully reintegrate into society.
Problem
Despite the desire to work more than two-thirds of those released from prison struggle to find employment. Gig economy platforms like TaskRabbit and DoorDash could help alleviate these issues, but TaskRabbit exclude ex-convicts from employment opportunities, and DoorDash is minimum wage with limited upward mobility.

In a survey of 3 in person interviews and 37 Maze applicants we discovered the following insights...

Biggest Concern:
Safety
Most users were concerned with issues related tp safety. Almost all of the female identifying interviewers felt apprehensive about working alone with an ex-felon.
The Solution:
Bodycams
In addition to through background checks, extensive training, and psych evaluation, all taskers must have a bodycam on them at all times.

Enhanced safety:
Body cameras provide an added layer of security, allowing employers to monitor and ensure the safety of their workers during tasks.

The recorded footage can serve as evidence in case of disputes or incidents, protecting employers from false claims or legal repercussions.

The presence of body cameras can discourage inappropriate behavior or misconduct by either the taskers or the clients.

Body cameras ensure that taskers are treated fairly, as their actions and interactions are documented, minimizing the potential for false accusations or mistreatment

Taskers can utilize the recorded footage to demonstrate their professionalism and adherence to guidelines, building trust and a positive reputation among clients.
Evidence in case of disputes:
In situations where conflicts arise with clients, the recorded footage can serve as evidence to support taskers
SWOT analysis
IDEATE
Building upon the existing model of TaskRabbit, I conducted a thorough site audit of their app
Findings:
- Though the app has been active since 2017, the platform still feels like it’s in beta
- Lacks design intentions with their font pairing
- Color theory and pairing are not utilized
- Needs better usage of spacing
- No specific design choices or itentions
User Flow
Task Flow 1 Making an Appointment
After signing up as a ex-felon, the user will need to list all the types skills they are able to offer along with any certifications they have obtained. After their profile is completed, the user will need to attend a minimum of 3 meetings before being able to start working.
Task Flow 2 Hire Someone
After creating a tasker profile, the user can search what type of task they want completed. Then the user can look through a variety of different taskers, and find which tasker they would like to hire for their needed task.
DESIGN
Though the original designs were created using TaskRabbit as a reference, multiple re-iterations were made after testing. Testers felt the design was sterile and mundane. Utilizing the findings in the site audit, like better usage of negatiive space, and clearer design intentions were implemented from the start.
Initial exploration – Lofi Wireframes
While the the functions of the app remained the same, there was much needed contrast in the aspects of design. Focusing on calming the user while still remaining playful. After numerous re-iterations, I chose to rely on illustratiions and color pallettes of blue for a more friendly aesthetic.
Final – Hifi Wireframes
The Taks Rabbit’s original designs, felt sterile and inpersonable. Though the app has been around since 2008, the design still feels as if it is in beta. To combat this, I implemented the ideas mentioned above, and brought the UX more up to date

TESTING
Finally Maze was used to test usibility and re-iterations.
Intially many testers only booked the tasker without recieving confirmation.This issue was alleviated after communicating with testers the purpose of the test and how a prototype functions differently than an actuall app.
REFLECTION
Doing the research for this app, I was shocked at the data presented during my research. In the beginning I was apprehensive about creating a app for such a marginalized demographics and worried if there would be enough users. However after discoving that almost 20 million people was the demographic, I felt more assured. In the process I learned.
Impact is more important than intent.
Though the intent might be good, how it ultimately affects the community is more important. ChanceRabbit is meant to be supportive of each individual released from prison because everyone has different needs, thus the requirement for pysch evaluations. By connecting users with skilled individuals who can assist with various tasks and services, ChanceRabbit not only helps ex-convicts regain financial stability but also fosters a sense of purpose and dignity.
The needs of one demographic ultimately affects the whole.
The impact of ChanceRabbit extends beyond the individuals it serves. By providing opportunities for employed ex-convicts to contribute to the economy through their work and consumer spending, ChanceRabbit stimulates economic growth and fosters a more inclusive society. Additionally, by addressing the disproportionate impact of employment barriers on Black and Brown communities, ChanceRabbit contributes to reducing existing disparities in employment opportunities.
